What is infinity

Long ago, when I heard about infinity first in school, I asked mom what is infinity - the symbol that looks something similar to a horizontal 8. She said it is something very large. The homework question in the book was - what is infinity + 1. Everyone (including that textbook) said infinity.  My first thought on hearing this was "what non-sense".  A google search gives conflicting answers. Something very large is just not satisfactory enough as an answer. I will attempt to answer my own question - what is infinity ?  To understand abstract concepts such as infinity, we must use logic as well as feel what it means. We often forget that a highly intellectual mind cannot absorb concepts correctly. Luckily, two tools can help us here - imagination and visualization. Visualization is not the same as hallucination. Visualization is a conscious process that involves effort.   You might have come across this as a visualization exercise elsewhere, but it is very u...

Mother-land

Today, a song called "Vande Mataram" showed up on my you-tube feed. As I was listening, I had a unique experience of truly respecting the country I am in. (not where I was born and spent the first 20 years) We don't always have control with regard to which country we will live in. That is because our ambitions and inspirations often require us to travel to other countries and inhibiting our ambitions and inspirations is unhealthy. We are bombarded with concepts of homeland, motherland, etc. As a result we are unable to perceive that the land we are currently in is nourishing us just like a mother. Instead we will be pushed to think about missing our home! (the childhood one).   When we think of mother, comfort comes to our mind. A mother never wishes the child to be unhappy. If we are truly unhappy, sometimes just a change of home in the same country might make a huge difference!, or on some occasions we may go back to the place we were born, or even to a different coun...

The Cardio and mask conundrum

I was talking to a friend who was annoyed with having to wear a mask during cardio exercises. (Most gyms require that). It just made sense to me, I was also definitely of the opinion that wearing a mask during cardio exercises defeats the purpose of cardio. Mainly because I had experienced it too earlier, but, I didn't have an explanation for it at the time. As humans, we like a rational explanation. On the back of my mind, this thought was running, and while buying my groceries the answer suddenly hit me. This was my mental exercise of the day.  Like Feynman says, we just have to go a little deep and everything seems so beautiful. One of the main benefit of cardio exercises like running, swimming, etc. is a much improved lung capacity. It just forces you to breathe deeper.  Have you ever seen a decent runner or a swimmer with a bad lung capacity ? If you measure the oxygen saturation levels of blood in a decent runner or a swimmer, it will almost always be 99 or 100....

Milk, yogurt, turmeric

Today I am having an inclination to write about how we consume turmeric and milk, yogurt as well.  Before proceeding, I would like to thank my teachers - a guy named Ernst from whom I learnt about habits, and an ayurvedic practitioner named vaidya mishra whose work I research on, but he passed on a few years ago.  Like Feynman said, to find the truth, you have to go deep, really deep. Having to experience it helps! It's important to not be a fanatic and follow a balanced approach, but the more I research, the more I find that we are in bad habits, more like conditioned to be in bad habits, more often than not due to lack of knowledge.  Moving on,  Turmeric :  At one time, I had something that was causing inflammation in my body. Alongwith other things, my doctor prescribed curcumin which is concentrated turmeric. I knew turmeric is an extremely potent herb, but it did not help me at that time, it in fact was more aggravating, I listened to my body and stop...

How to defend nasal cold

Today,  I will write about how I defend cold and sore throat. It's a relevant time to write about this with the current situation in the world, and it's extremely annoying to have a cold or a bad throat.  These methods have worked for me, and are pretty simple too, especially when I have indulged in ice-cream when my body was asking me not to! and I would end up with a sore throat.  These are not my inventions, but taught to me by different teachers I have come in contact with. You might see these things in another book or any video you come across. Some of them are never really mentioned because it's either too simple or people are invested in getting medicines sold.   Cold starts in the nose and then settles into the throat area. It's best to kill cold when in the nose. The fastest way to kill a cold is to fast. Nothing else will kill it sooner. This is because the body is intelligent by nature (that's how it knows how to deliver which molecule of a particular...

My experiences with a year of change

Normally, I like to write something of a general nature, but this time I'm getting inspiration to write something personal.  As we come towards the end of the calendar year, I had a thought to reflect on how it went. Definitely not as planned! and not easy, but one with a lot of growth! and realization. I realized that a lifelong passion for me is in the area of healing (physical and mental).  The focus was mainly on using time, available resources, gaining wisdom. I went to India to visit family and was supposed to return in March. But pandemic happened, and I got stuck in India. So, you are with family pretty much and going to work from home - you'd guess it's easy right! - unfortunately it wasn't in my case.  I was working in a team based in San Diego, CA which had just gotten off the ground and we had just started to put in the performances after gaining experience. I had calls with my teammates on how to manage this. After some thought, the conclusion that cam...

Why sleep, alcohol and recreational marijuana are so tempting

I want to write from my experience why sleep alcohol and recreational marijuana are tempting. Especially the first two. Make no mistake, deep sleep is a pretty healthy motivation. I think it is needed, especially now when we are all dealing with a pandemic.  To really understand this, we have to be logical and reason with something that can be understood easily by human mind. When we sleep, all our senses are temporarily closed, all voluntary muscles take rest. We all know how good we feel after a dreamless deep sleep. Blessed are those who can go to deep sleep at will!, deep sleep is always dreamless.   Alcohol and marijuana also will literally stop the senses. There is no judgement, but the only problem is they have just one caveat which will not serve well in the long term. We feel happy and light because the senses are suppressed, which means once the effect is gone, we get right back into the grind!.  Also, all of us at times have experienced deep concentr...
