Can you make money unselfishly ? - Greatest good for the greatest number of people!
They teach us that the ideal goal of a business should be to create value. But, is that translatable to our regular living ?
Some business entities do not care how they make money. Is that useful ? When someone acts selfishly to serve their purpose, it causes some rift. When a collection of people act selfishly to earn money, they unknowingly push the world into periodic patterns of economic depression. How then are we supposed to manage ? I think the answer is a change in mentality at both the micro level and the macro level.
At the macro level, businesses should be based on the foundational law - "greatest good for the greatest number of people possible." Using psychological advertising tricks to make someone buy something they don't need is not good. They will go to competition when they realize this and the acquisition cost of getting a new customer in the door is much higher than the cost to maintain an old customer.
At the micro level, as humans, we should strive to earn to meet our needs and our responsibilities comfortably, and have a good savings buffer. Then, if our capacity permits, be of service to others. Attempts to fulfil selfish desires beyond comfort and a buffer is bordering on greed. Once you see and smell the food you love, does it matter if you eat it from a gold plate or a silver plate or a steel plate ?
The law of material success for us humans is - Consistent actions that lead to the greatest good for us and the greatest number of people.
Ask any successful investor, they will say they invested their capital in generally good stocks consistently for a good amount of time. The consistency factor averaged out the variation of years where the stock went down. Similarly, when you do good to others, the returns are bound to be good. You may have occasional times of getting dinged, but the returns overall are always good. That in turn provides necessary impetus to improve the quality of your life through more fruitful interactions with others, which is a major part of happy existence.
