Balancing emotions at difficult times

Every now and then, we will face things that we cannot control. The untrained person might feel an increase in heart-rate, faster breath rate, restlessness and irritation.

Irregularity and volatility in heart rate has a far more harmful effect than one imagines because heart along-with the mind controls all functions of the body. It is therefore wise to know methods to stay calm in stressful times.

A lot of people have overcome difficulties, but blessed is the man who can face them without falling prey to restless thoughts. At an age where humans are hungry for truth, it is best to study the divine teachings with a scientific mind.

The divine teachings say - center within yourself and you will be able to remain in joy amidst crashing worlds. I would like to write about instructions given by Krishna in the Gita, which can help deal with some difficult situations.

He talks about surrender. Unfortunately, the concept of surrender is often clouded or confused with weakness.

Krishna says, "relinquish everything on to me without exception, whatever you need and truly desire, and some extra shall be added onto you".

He does not mean that you become a loser. Here relinquish everything means, give up expectations, but do your duty. It is the law that every good action done receives an equal result. The second part of the sentence "whatever you need and truly desire, and some extra shall be added onto you", is not emphasized.

Why would someone have the motivation to surrender healthily if the result is a loss ? So, not worrying about things you cannot control is in-fact a good habit!

And also, watch your heart-rate in these times. Deep breaths and tensing/relaxing the body a few times is the easiest way to move back to calmness.
